The Jensen Transformers DM2-2XX Dual Line Output Isolator provides an elegant way to avoid ground loop
problems while driving balanced or unbalanced inputs from either balanced or unbalanced outputs. Built
with 80 percent nickel transformers, the DM2-2XX offers excellent performance when used with the relatively
high output impedances that are common in consumer electronic gear. This ISO-MAX has no input or output
cable length restrictions. In addition, the DM2-2XX's ground option switches solve other equipment
problems.
The DM2-2XX is available with your choice of XLR, RCA, 1/4" Phone Jack or BNC connectors - just choose
the configuration that you prefer below. You may also choose the "None" option if you prefer to use
the barrier strip.
Here are the audiophile-quality specifications:
- Distortion 0.004% typ. at 20 Hz and +4 dBu output level
- Wide bandwidth: !3 dB at 0.10 Hz and 15 MHz
- Handles levels up to +22 dBu at 20 Hz and +26 dBu at 30 Hz
- Excellent time domain performance: DLP 0.3E typ. 20 Hz to 20 kHz
Ground Loops?
(or why the best planned systems sometimes sound bad)
It is a subject that is seldom discussed in manufacturers publications, or even in magazines of the trade,
but ground loops can happen even in the most carefully planned audio system.
When devices in the same system are powered by separate power sources, that can cause a difference in
ground potential between the two pieces of equipment. It can be because one of the circuits is loaded more
heavily than the other, or because one run is longer than the other, or any number of other reasons that
are beyond the scope of this article, but the result of this difference in ground potential is commonly
referred to as a ground loop.
Mixing balanced equipment with unbalanced equipment by using passive adapters or cables often exasperates
ground loop problems.
The Solution
The Jensen Transformers DM2-2XX is elegant in its simplicity. Simply insert the DM2-2XX anywhere in the
signal path and immediately, the effects of the ground loop become a non-issue. Problem solved. There
are not too many things that one can install in an audio system that can provide so much improvement with
so little effort.
